MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — On Saturday, June 20th, the town of Lane’s population will surge by as much as eightfold thanks to a popular festival.

Usually about 50 people, the Leap to Lane event brings in roughly 400 thanks to its mix of fun activities. Board member Ed Gray tells Mitchell Now a unique collection of vintage military vehicles will be on display. It is a chance to get up close to the half-track; a hybrid with wheels in the front, tank treads in the back that was used in World War II. The smallest item is likely the Cushman Model 53 scooter. It was designed to be parachuted out of aircraft. When paratroopers would land behind enemy lines, they would link up with the scooter and have a much quicker mode of transportation than on foot alone.

Leap to Lane will have a car show, motorcycle show, and tractor show. Owners of all makes, models, and years are encouraged to attend. Gray says he tells those on the fence about participating, “If you are proud of it, bring it.”

Live music will rock the stage from Mogan’s Heroes, a group out of Sioux Falls. They specialize in tunes from the 1950’s and ‘60’s. Gray has managed to get the local act Stomp Box to come out of retirement. They’ll feature a mix of rock and country music.

Gray is already salivating over the food that will be offered up. The sheriff is serving a whole hog. Organizers have already secured 36 racks of ribs and the smoker will be working overtime, plus plenty of sides.

For the kids, a lawnmower and Power Wheels demolition derby is scheduled. Gray asks the little ones to bring their bikes. Area law enforcement will do a bike rodeo, which teaches safety skills. Afterwards, a bicycle poker run will be set up. Riders will stop at five stations around the area where they’ll get freebies. Bike helmets will be given away, along with 13 refurbished bikes that are cleaned up and made like new through a program that exists at the Mike Durphee State Prison in Springfield.
