MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — A Brookings student has been named South Dakota’s winner of the Congressional App Challenge.

U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson, R-South Dakota, announced that Nana Kwame Dwomoh of Brookings earned the honor for his app, “WorkWellness.”

Johnson praised Dwomoh’s achievement, saying the student overcame multiple obstacles while developing the app and gained valuable coding experience along the way.

“Technology is increasingly important in career fields, and the App Challenge is a great opportunity for students to test and improve their skills,” Johnson said in a statement.

Dwomoh designed “WorkWellness” to improve productivity and personal health by running timed work sessions, prompting stretch breaks, and recommending targeted exercises for areas of discomfort. The app also tracks total work time and features an AI-powered wellness assistant that offers advice on posture, ergonomics, and healthy daily routines.

Dwomoh said his idea came from personal experience.

“As a high school student who spends long hours at a desk and on a computer, I’ve felt back pain myself,” he said. “Millions of students and office workers share this same discomfort from ignoring what their bodies need during work sessions.”

Each year, students from every congressional district compete in the Congressional App Challenge. Dwomoh’s app will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol, featured online, and he will have the opportunity to participate in the annual #HouseofCode event with other winners from across the country.

Johnson announced this year’s competition in May.
