MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Burn bans are now in effect in both Davison and Douglas counties as dry conditions, wind and low humidity increase the risk of fast-moving grass and wildfires.

Davison County officials announced an immediate burn ban prohibiting all open burning until further notice. The ban includes brush piles, agricultural burning and other outdoor open flames that are not specifically exempted under the county’s resolution. Residents are urged to review the full resolution for details and restrictions.

Douglas County’s burn ban took effect immediately on Feb. 24, 2025, and is described as comprehensive, prohibiting burning of any kind, including burn barrels and campfires. County officials said violations of the county ordinance will result in a $500 fine and that enforcement is expected.

Officials in both counties emphasized that current conditions can allow fires to spread rapidly and become difficult to control. Anyone who sees smoke or fire activity is asked to report it immediately by calling 911.

Douglas County officials noted that rural residents may be able to arrange temporary trash pickup at their farms and encouraged residents to contact the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County Emergency Manager or their local fire chief with questions.
