Dam Analysis Delays Lake Mitchell Project

Photo: Metro Services

MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The timeline for the Lake Mitchell Improvement Project has been pushed back. The South Dakota Department of Ag and Natural Resources is requiring the City of Mitchell to complete a 50% Probable Maximum Flow and Breach Analysis before work can move forward on the dam reconstruction. City officials had hoped to bid the drawdown structure this fall, but draining of the lake will not happen in 2025. The state says the analysis must be finished first to ensure safety once the dam is breached. An update is expected at the September 15th City Council meeting.
