MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — An inmate at Mike Durfee State Prison is looking at the possibility of an extra 20 years behind bars after being caught with illegal drugs while locked up in November 2025.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley announced Wednesday that Keith Hawk was found guilty on two felony counts by a jury in Bon Homme County Circuit Court. The charge for possessing a prohibited substance by an inmate could carry a sentence of ten years. The count for unauthorized possession of a controlled substance has a maximum sentence of five years. Both can be doubled, though, since Hawk is already in prison.

An investigation by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation determined Hawk had smuggled in K2. The stash was discovered on November 18th of last year.

The attorney general’s office prosecuted the case with final sentencing set for August 21st.
