Local Governments Struggle With New Property Tax Limits While Finalizing 2026 Budgets

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Local government officials are finalizing budgets for 2026 and struggling with new property tax restrictions as they do. The property tax changes were approved by the legislature this year. Sioux Falls City Finance director Shawn Pritchett has been frustrated as he closely followed and testified during this summer’s property tax Task Force hearings. Pritchett says the property tax limitation law passed this year penalizes areas like Lincoln County and the city of Sioux Falls, that are aggressively growing.
