MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — An unexpected severe thunderstorm in the area has caused the Mitchell Parks and Recreation Department to cancel outdoor U8 baseball on Wednesday evening.

The storm was first detected by the National Weather Service near Artesian along Highway 34 at about 3:40 p.m. The main threat was wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour, along with heavy rain. The storm was moving southeast at 45 mph and crossed into portions of Miner and McCook Counties.

It rumbled past Spencer and Salem, with more cells developing over Mitchell. The weather never reached the severe level in the Palace City, but it forced organizers to cancel some outdoor events. For those in the line of severe weather, downed tree branches and damage to roofs and siding were possible.
