MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The Mitchell City Council has approved more than $644,000 in funding for 11 non-profits as part of its proposed 2026 budget. The subsidies represent a one-point-five percent increase over the mayor’s original spending plan, with council members restoring many cuts that had been proposed. The Mitchell Republic reports that over $500,000 will go to groups housed in the Chamber of Commerce and Corn Palace Gift Shop building, including the Development Corporation, Visitors Bureau, and Main Street and Beyond. Not all requests were funded. The Mitchell Area Community Theater was denied after council members said the group failed to meet previous commitments on building repairs. Other groups receiving support include the Municipal Band, Dakota Counseling, Safe Place of Eastern South Dakota, and the city’s annual fireworks display. The council will take a final vote on the full 2026 budget in November. For more Government stories from MitchellNow.com, Click Here.
