PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Governor Larry Rhoden told lawmakers yesterday that replacing the state penitentiary marks South Dakota’s biggest public safety investment. He said nearly all inmates will return to their communities and deserve better preparation. Rhoden said a bipartisan task force unanimously backed a new 1,500-bed prison in northeast Sioux Falls, with more room for treatment and training. Northern Plains News reports that the $650 million project is contract-capped, as lawmakers debated the bill and possible amendments. The Legislature passed the plan with two-thirds majority in both chambers. For more Government stories from MitchellNow.com, Click Here.
