SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Governor Larry Rhoden has released the full plan for a new state prison at the Benson Road site in Sioux Falls. Lawmakers will take it up during the September 23rd special session. The $650 million proposal reflects unanimous support from the prison task force and trims $175 million in costs compared to the earlier Lincoln County site. The plan reduces overall square footage by 160,000 but adds 27,000 square feet of vocational training space. Savings come from consolidating housing units, scaling back intake and utility space, and lowering site and soft costs. Rhoden says the project will provide South Dakota with a 100-year facility designed to support rehabilitation and reduce recidivism. The governor also released a side-by-side comparison with Nebraska’s recent prison proposal, which has been a frequent point of debate. For more Government stories from MitchellNow.com, Click Here.
