BROOKINGS, S.D. — March 13, 2023 — South Dakota State University and the School of American and Global Studies will host the South Dakota Supreme Court next week for its March 2023 Term of Court.

The justices will be on campus next Tuesday through Thursday, March 21-23, for the court’s spring traveling session, with most public events taking place at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center, 1601 University Boulevard, Brookings.

On Tuesday, March 21, the justices will work in a closed-door session. Then SDSU’s Office of the President, the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and the School of American and Global Studies will welcome the court at a reception later in the day.

On Wednesday and Thursday, March 22-23, the court will hold oral arguments in the Performing Arts Center’s Larson Memorial Concert Hall, from 9 a.m. to noon both days. The arguments are open to the public, and those who attend must pass through a security screening.

The court will hear oral arguments in four cases both days. The schedule of arguments is as follows, with a 10-minute break between sessions:
Wednesday
• 9 a.m. Detmers v. Costner
• 9:45 a.m. State v. Foshay
• 10:30 a.m. Bracken v. DLR
• 11:15 a.m. Estate of Beadle
Thursday
• 9 a.m. State v. Smith
• 9:45 a.m. Estate of Simon
• 10:30 a.m. State v. Banks
• 11:15 a.m. Implicated individual

Chief Justice Steven Jensen extended a special invitation to the residents of Brookings and area communities to attend any of the court’s sessions.

On Wednesday, panel discussions are also planned from 1-3 p.m. in the center’s Founders Recital Hall with the attorneys, justices and law clerks. The schedule includes:
• Attorney panel, 1-2 p.m., moderated by Lisa Hager, associate professor of political science at SDSU, and Neil Fulton, dean of the University of South Dakota School of Law
• Justice panel, 2-2:45 p.m., moderated by the Supreme Court administrator
• Law clerk panel, 2:45-3 p.m., moderated by Hager
