Herreid school in north central South Dakota will not hold classes today after an unknown person attempted to enter the school twice on Wednesday afternoon. According to a social media post from the school district, the person attempted to enter the school at both front door entrances. After unsuccessful attempts to enter the school, the person left in a vehicle. The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office says that a deputy stopped a stolen vehicle about two miles south of Herreid. The female driver would not comply with commands to exit her vehicle. She stated that she had dropped off a male with a gun at the school. She then drove away from the officer, and a vehicle pursuit was initiated for approximately two miles. The pursuit was terminated, and deputies responded to the school, which was cleared by law enforcement. The suspect is believed to have fled the area and is currently not a threat to the community.
