Two Men Arrested in Mitchell on North Carolina Kidnapping Charges

MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Two men were arrested in Mitchell on Monday evening after law enforcement tracked down a vehicle connected to a possible kidnapping investigation originating in North Carolina.

According to information released by authorities, Mitchell Dispatch received a report from Pierre State Radio at about 5:15 p.m. on March 9, 2026, about a possible kidnapping. The vehicle was last reported traveling westbound on Interstate 90 near mile marker 364.

Officers continued receiving updated location information and eventually found the vehicle at a gas station in Mitchell.

Law enforcement made contact with the occupants without incident and located the alleged victim. Two men were detained and questioned at the Mitchell Police Department.

After interviews in Mitchell and coordination with authorities in North Carolina, 57-year-old Freddrick Corprew and 43-year-old Jay Gurganus were arrested on kidnapping charges out of North Carolina.

Authorities said the victim was taken to a hospital as a precaution and later released back to law enforcement as the investigation continued.

Agencies assisting in the case included the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Davison County Sheriff’s Office, Hanson County Sheriff’s Office, Mitchell Police Department and the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina.
